Central Community College’s (CCC) health, wellness and sustainability efforts are expanding to include a bike sharing program with the help of a $10,533 wellness grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska. The grant will be presented to CCC during a bike share program kickoff, at the Grand Island Campus (by the new bike stations, between the 100 and 200 building wings) at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, August 6.
“Our wellness grant program is all about finding unique programs that make a difference in the health and wellness of local communities,” said Amy Bailey, BCBSNE senior director of brand and buzz. “As a Grand Island native, I’m proud that our support will help CCC students and staff enjoy the health benefits of biking – while enjoying the city’s trails and paths.”
The program is an extension of the college’s current sustainability, health and wellness programs. A bike sharing station has been set up on the Grand Island Campus where riders can opt to borrow a bike and ride on the city’s 14 miles of trails, around campus or in the community. As the first and only bike sharing program in Grand Island, the service has a potential to serve over 3,800 riders at CCC-Grand Island, and beyond with successful community partnerships in the future.
“We believe that when bicycle sharing is done right, it can be a perfect tool for healthy, efficient, affordable, fun and sustainable recreation and transportation,” said Minetta Khan, sustainability coordinator, Central Community College.
The second phase of the pilot program for CCC employees and students will include forging partnerships with community organizations and businesses to expand the number of stations and bikes. The CCC community is already encouraged to cycle to the Nebraska State Fair at Grand Island’s Fonner Park this month.
BCBSNE’s wellness grant program is part of our larger community engagement strategy, which is designed to support health and wellness initiatives across the state. This year, BCBSNE provided funds to six programs, ranging from providing healthy meals to families in need to creating wellness programs for individuals with mental illnesses.
