Special Enrollment Period

Q: What is a Special Enrollment Period?

A: Open Enrollment for health insurance is now over, but some situations (Qualifying Events) would allow a person to qualify for health insurance outside of Open Enrollment. (Open Enrollment begins again November 1, 2015.)

Q: What is a Qualifying Event?

A: A life event where a person can still obtain health insurance after the Open Enrollment period deadline has passed. These events include (but not limited to):

  • Change in family size (birth of a child, adoption, marriage, divorce)
  • Turning 26
  • Early retirement
  • Permanent move to a new area
  • Loss of health insurance coverage (due to termination of employment, reduction of hours, discontinuation of employer-based policy, or death of spouse)

Q: I’ve experienced a Qualifying Event. Is there a deadline as to when I need to enroll in a new plan?

A: Yes, you must enroll within 60 days of the event.

Q: Once I purchase a health insurance policy, when does it take effect?

A: That will vary on the date of the Qualifying Event and when you apply for the policy. Most policies take effect within 60 days of purchase.

Q: Where can I shop for and purchase a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska plan?

A: That’s easy! You can call 877-591-2583 to speak with an enrollment adviser right here in Nebraska.
