Executive Vice President, Sales and Account Management

Mike Nelson is executive vice president, sales and account management for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE). He is also a member of the company’s executive leadership team.

Nelson is a seasoned health insurance executive with more than 15 years of experience in commercial sales and service, value-based care model development and operations and risk selection and pricing. Prior to joining BCBSNE, he served as a regional vice president at Aetna, where he was responsible for profit and loss of the organization’s commercial business within a 10-state region, resulting in more than $7 billion in revenue. There, Nelson also facilitated provider relations within the company, overseeing a joint venture with Texas Health Resources and five additional hospital-based ACOs.

In addition to Aetna, Nelson has held senior leadership positions at Coventry Health Care of Nebraska and Iowa (vice president of sales, COO and CEO) and Partners in Primary Care (market president).

Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
