Virta
Type 2 Only
A new keto-based type 2 diabetes reversal method from Virta is now available to EHA members with type 2 diabetes at no cost. Virta is a nutrition and wellness program to reverse type 2 diabetes using a ketogenic nutrition method.
You will use Virta-designed tools and equipment and personnel for clinical engagement. Virta’s proven results include:
- 1.0% reduction in HbA1C
- 5% weight loss
- 40% cost reduction in diabetes medications
There are certain situations that may disqualify you from using the Virta program. If any of the following apply to you, please sign up to work with a nurse diabetes educator and the diabetes management program (scroll down to the next section).
You may NOT be eligible for the Virta program due to one of the following reasons:
- Prediabetes or Type 1 diabetes diagnosis
- Outside the ages of 18-79
- Medicare is your primary insurance
- Pregnant or nursing
- History of stroke or heart failure
- Currently undergoing dialysis
- Chronic liver failure
- Metabolic abnormalities such as Cushing’s syndrome or Addison disease
- Psychiatric disorders, such as, bipolar or schizophrenia
- Taking certain medication, such as, Antiarrhythmics, Coumadin, Lithium
Getting started is easy! Simply fill out the form and a Virta representative will contact you to complete your enrollment.
Note: The program is also available in Spanish. Members will work with Spanish speaking enrollment and care coordinators.
Virta provides type 2 diabetes management services to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska and is responsible for their services.

Our nurse diabetes educators can help you manage your condition and get the most out of your benefits. They will help create a personalized plan that fits you, provides encouragement, support and:
- Education on diet and exercise
- Help taking medication as prescribed
- Help with your doctor’s recommendations
- Assistance with insurance benefits and coverage

Insulin therapy at no cost to you
Insulin therapy is often an important part of diabetes to manage blood sugar and prevent complications such as eyesight, nerve and kidney damage.
Insulin therapy helps prevent diabetes complications by keeping your blood sugar within your target range. If you have type 1 diabetes, insulin therapy is vital for replacing the insulin your body doesn’t produce. Sometimes people with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes need insulin therapy if other treatments haven’t been able to keep blood glucose levels within the desired range.
The following insulin therapy medications are covered as preventive care, which means you can get your insulin prescription filled at no cost to you.
