What not-for-profit means for you.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is a mutual, not-for-profit health plan. We don’t answer to outside shareholders, which allows us to keep our focus on serving our members and supporting the best possible care and outcomes.
BCBSNE is owned by its members, not outside shareholders. Our focus is serving our members and helping them access quality care, understand their coverage and get more value from their healthcare.
Member-owned. Member-focused.
Most premium dollars pay for members’ healthcare. The remaining portion supports the people, technology, security and services needed to process claims, protect member information and help members use their coverage.
For profit
Operates to generate financial returns for owners or shareholders.
Nonprofit
Typically organized around a charitable, educational or community mission and may rely on donations or grants.
Not-for-profit
Does not have outside shareholders. Surplus supports the organization’s operations, member services and other approved purposes.
Not-for-profit status does not remove the underlying costs of medical care, prescription drugs and other health services. It means BCBSNE does not have outside shareholders expecting financial returns.
Our focus remains on serving members, paying claims and working to deliver greater value from their coverage.
We also work to help control costs by negotiating fair prices, supporting lower-cost care options and reducing fraud, waste and unnecessary spending.
More tests, procedures or treatments do not always lead to better outcomes and may sometimes introduce unnecessary risks. Our goal is to support care that is appropriate, evidence-based and focused on the best possible outcome for the member.
We know coverage reviews can be frustrating. We’re working to make these processes clearer and easier to navigate while respecting the role of providers in making medical decisions.
