Casts and Strapping
Billing and Reimbursement
Policy Number: RP-P-015
Last Updated: Feb. 7, 2022
Initial cast application during fracture care, including closed, percutaneous, open or dislocations, includes applying and removing the cast or traction device. Casting or traction is an integral part of fracture care and should not be reported separately.
Casting, splinting and strapping should only be reported as an initial service (without definitive procedure or treatment) when a fracture, dislocation, injury, or strapping is the method of treatment.
Casting and Strapping Supplies
Following CMS guidelines, casting and strapping supply codes should be reported using the appropriate Q codes when billing for cast applications. Supplies are reimbursed for casting and repairs only.
